Earth Day is 40 years old!

Earth Day is turning 40 years old on April 22nd.

In celebrating it’s awesome birthday, Team Eco Etsy will be having some rocking parties to promote our mission of spreading eco-love and promoting the team.

First, we are going to repeat our successful event we had last year called “Green Share”

Green Share is an idea conceived by the members of the EcoEtsy Team in 2009. It is hope – it is our promise to spread the green idea within our own communities, all over the world. The idea is to pass on and share a gift of seeds to classrooms, local businesses, neighbors, friends and family. The gift can be anonymous or can help show your business or organization’s commitment to Eco-Friendly living.

Many EcoEtsy members will participate in Green Share, but anyone can participate really! The benefits of participating are numerous:

* All the materials you need to get started are free – just download and assemble. This makes a great classroom project, or something to do with your kids for Earth Day.

* Giving within your own community helps support change at the heart of where we live. Supporting our community has nothing but positive benefits – especially when green growing things are involved!

* Businesses and organizations can gift Green Share seed packets & planters as a way to get the word out about their own efforts.

Here’s a sample of one of the awesome seed packets past co-leader Lolaness designed.

You can download this free template and others for print, or you can recycle any paper, like brown grocery bags, to make your own design like Rikkianne did. Either way, it’s a great way to send a message to your community and share some eco-love.

Second, we would like 100% participation from Team Eco Etsy for the next event. We will be sponsoring a silent auction and donate the proceeds to charities in celebration of Earth Day. Details will follow as the plans get more concrete but the idea is this:

We would like to ask you to donate an item and your marketing material to be included in a bag (we are thinking t-shirt bags) to be auctioned. The auction categories will be:

  1. Baby
  2. Health and Beauty
  3. Home Decor
  4. Paper Goods
  5. Fashion
  6. Jewelry

You can send your item to Rikkianne to be included in the bags that will be prepared for auctions. When the bags are assembled to be auctioned, we will post the actual auction on the blog where you can leave your bids as comments. When the auction is over, the monies will be collected, bags sent to the winner, and the money will be donated to an organization(s) that the team will choose.

I think this will be an awesome event that everyone who’s involved will benefit. If you would like to donate and participate in this event, please contact Rikkianne (you can find her e-mail address on the Yahoo Group Forum) for the address where you can send your item to. The deadline to send in your item is Saturday April 10th.

Let’s celebrate Earth Day’s 40th Birthday with a big BANG! Let’s spread our eco-love and support those organizations that share our passion and work tirelessly for the health of our planet.

*For Eco Etsy Members: Please go to Yahoo Group Forum and make suggestions on which organizations you think we should support and for more directions about the auction.*

I live a simple life. But want to spread the message that green living is easy if you weave it into your life and choose the right products. So I co-founded Green Sisterhood, a network of green female content writers whose mission is to change the market and to introduce you to wonderful green companies. I also share eco tips, fun DIY's and enviro news on ecokaren. I sell handmade goodies in my Etsy shop and help others open Etsy businesses as a handmade educator. 1. Yeah! I'm excited about this and have a few ideas for what I'll donate.

  2. I did this last year and it was a lot of fun – folks really appreciated it. I made my seed packets out of pages from seed catalogs and then just printed instructions onto mailing labels.

  3. this all sounds good, will find out more about sending an item for the silent auction :)

  4. Winkydinks says:

    love it!

Those are great ideas. I am participating in them all. I'm going to still be out on my 210 mile hike, but i'm going to be xtra green that day. I think more people need to participate in helping the earth.

  6. Brizel Handcrafts says:

    Nice & fun !

  7. Rabbit, (love that!)

You can do whatever you want to do. The idea is to spread the message about our love for Earth.

  8. I love the silent auction for charity idea. And i have tons of seeds i collected from last years garden. Do we give them soil too (or leave that part up to the recipients)?

  9. These are both great ideas. Starting to get excited for Earth Day:)

  10. Brass Paperclip says:

Very cool stuff! Looking forward to participating in both events. I may even try to stash a seed packet in all of my outgoing orders in April. :)
