Business Tips: Creative Marketing & Promotion

Marketing & Promotion are a lot like dating, you end up kissing a lot of toads before you find your prince.  Marketing and Promotions is a hit or miss type deal, what works for one business may not be as effective for another business.

As an Etsy shop owner, you work hard to create a great product but the biggest challenge we all face is in marketing our products to create buzz and draw a following. So I asked our fellow EcoEtsy Team members to share their best marketing and promotion tips; I’ve also added a list of additional marketing “stunts” to help you find your prince.

1. Keep Your Shop Fresh

Keep adding new items to your shop. It doesn’t have to be every day. But keep your viewers coming back.

2. The Fishbowl

Remember that you, your product & your shop on are display. Everyone can see you into your world – your fishbowl: on the internet, on blogs & social media, and even at the grocery. Act appropriately!

3. Wear it Out!

If possible, wear your art out and keep business cards handy! I often get comments or inquiries on my repurposed flower or button hair pins I’m wearing or the upcycled coffee cozy around my coffee.

4. Word of Mouth!

So far, more than 85% of my sales were custom items. Many times people come back, recommend me, or someone sees the product and wants similar. The most powerful marketing tool are my own sold items.

5. Wholesale and Retail Prices

Retail prices should be 3 to 4x material cost. That covers your time and remaining overhead, plus profit. Wholesale should be 2 to 3x cost. Unwitting undercutting harms you and other crafters

6. Make Friendships

Make friendships with other sellers. Promote each other by trading buttons & banners, running sales together, making treasuries, & using social media to tell everyone!

#7 Join Teams

Etsy is very much a community. Joining, networking, and participating in teams not only increases your Etsy experience, but your teammates think of you first when they need something you make!

In addition to the great tips offered by our EcoEtsy Team members, here are my TOP 5 Creative Tips:

#1 Offer Special Promotions for your Twitter and Facebook Followers. Social networking sites by far are awesome places to offer promotions [you have a captive audience] in return your followers will reciprocate by promoting your shop and fan pages.

#2 Create a Killer Ad and print it on small recycled postcards. Mail the cards mail it to prospects in your target market or hike it over to your local mall or shopping center and place on car windshields or ask local retailers, libraries, and coffee shops if you can leave some postcards on the counters. Postcards are cheap and easy to use and your prospects are more likely to read it because it doesn’t require any additional work, like opening an envelope and unfolding as flyer.

#3 Start a YouTube Show [This is something that would be great to start as a team] posting short clips where you offer tutorials for creating eco-friendly products, include your shop name and URL on every video you post, then Tweet it and link it to your Facebook Fan Page or Personal Page.

#4 Start a Customer of the Month awards. People love being recognized and let’s face it if they are purchasing from your shop they are probably trying hard to “go green”, this is a perfect case for an award. Create a certificate, plaque or other type of award be sure its branded with your shop name and URL; these won’t get thrown out.

#5 Create Scatch Off Cards and include one with each order you ship out.  Prizes on your scratch off can be things like “Free Shipping”, “Free Sample”, “Free Shipping”, “5% off”, “10% Off”, etc.  These are easy and inexpensive to make.  To make your scratch off cards all you need is cardstock with your promotion printed, clear contact paper to cover your printed promotion, 1 part dishsoap and 1 part metallic acrylic paint mixed to paint your clear contact paper. Once dry you have a scratch off.  This has been my most successful promotion.

  1. I forgot to add this to my first comment. Here is an alternative way to create your own scratch off cards. Print your promotion on cardstock that will be cut into small tag size cards. Cover the side that has your promotion printed with clear cardstock or one wide stripe of tape. Use a black or green crayon to cover the top of the clear tape. You can also experiment with melting and pouring the crayon over the tape.

    “Create a Youtube channel, then make a killer ad that links your Youtube and Etsy shop print them on recycled postcard, include a scatch off incentive and distribute to your Facebook fans, twitter followers and anyone who has purchased from you in the past and make them all your customers of the month”
