On Thursday November 11th is Veteran’s Day in the US, also known as Armistice or Remembrance Day in most Commonwealth countries, including Canada, Australia and the UK. It is a holiday to observe and commemorate the sacrifice that veterans and civilians have made during times of war. In Belgium this day is known as the Day of Peace in the Flanders Fields, named after the battleground of World War I. More recently the idea of this being a day of peace is spreading worldwide. I believe that the impact of war, not only on humanity but also on our environment, is making our commitment to peace more urgent. We need to make peace with our environment as well as each other.
This week’s theme will reflect peace through symbols which have special meaning to you. I chose this sweet little sparrow as a symbol of peace for me and I hope for some of you too. Sparrows are a humble and common little bird whose message is about the power of simple folk to change the world. Feathers, especially white ones, have sometimes been a symbol of peace too. Birds can also be seen as a symbol of the fragility of innocent people and nature’s creatures caught in the destruction of war.
