Belle Terre

How did you get started in your chosen craft?

I’ve had sensitive skin my whole life and struggled with finding products that didn’t bother me. After being quite frustrated with the (lack of) options available, we started making it ourselves. We gave some away to friends and family one year and they loved it so much we decided to share it with others.

How do you make your craft or etsy store eco friendly?

We use organic and natural ingredients when available. We use recycled packaging when possible and all of our packaging is recyclable. When shipping our orders we reuse packaging materials when possible and buy recycled packaging when we can’t reuse. We buy carbon offsets for our business and we donate 5% of our sales to local charity. Last year we donated to the Nature Conservancy’s Adopt-an-Acre program, this year we are donating to United Family Services.

Why did you join the EcoEtsy Team?

We enjoy interacting with like minded individuals. We also feel like anything we can do to promote sustainability is worthwhile.

Which piece in your shop is your current favorite?

Wayne is in love with our Sweet Almond Lemongrass lotion and Julia adores the activated charcoal soap.

What are you currently working on?

We’ve just completed several months of R&D and have released lots of new items including lotions, scrubs and bath salts. Our next projects include solid perfumes as well as vegan lip balm and lotions.

What steps have you taken to lead a green life style?

We garden, recycle, compost (a worm bin and standard compost bin), keep bees, drive fuel efficient cars, and do some water catchment. We recently purchased six acres that we are planning to convert to a self sustaining hobby farm over the next few years.

Is your art/craft your full time job? If not what do you do to pay the bills?

Wayne works in retail management and Julia works as a practice administrator at a medical office. Our day jobs force us to constantly think about customer service – a great thing when it comes to our etsy shop!

What do you do when you are not crafting?

Working, gardening, sleeping. Julia is reading any chance she has.

What is the most eco-friendly purchase you have made?

Wayne bought a scythe to mow the grass at our land. For Julia this was a bit of a scary experience (those who have seen one in person will understand), but he used it several times last year and we’re proud to say that he retained all limbs and digits.

Emily is the mind behind Felt Sassy. She loves the whole re-use, recycle movement. One ugly old sweater can make a really cute and sassy pair of mittens...or flower...or anything you want! Plus, it's a great way to get the raw materials on the cheap or even free. She is a stay at home mom of two, a wife of a Cuban immigrant and has her MBA.

  1. wishing you lots of success with you etsy shop, Wayne and Julia! your soaps and lotions look lovely, as does your packaging. and the hobby farm sounds like a dream! i’m going to go look up the benefits of charcoal – i have icky dry, scratchy, chapped skin thru the winter and am always looking for a source of relief.
    all the best!

  2. Oooh I must know when the fragrance-free charcoal soap becomes available.

  3. I am seriously eyeing the avocado lotion. All your products look yummy enough to eat and I love that they are all natural. I favorited your shop and will take a look around to see what other yummy things I can find. Thanks so much eco etsy for sharing such a great find. :)
