{Business Tips} from Oprah

I am not a person who can claim that they have watched all 4,561 amazing episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show, nor would I ever attempt it at this point. However, the last episode of this American syndicated talk show had me scrambling for a pen; afraid I might miss her little pearls of wisdom. The woman is a genius. Oprah managed to take her experience as a Black Woman, her love for teaching others and her desire to make a difference; wrapped it up and presented it to us. . . and the entire Nation welcomed her with open arms (even Maya Angelou). Now that’s magical Business!!
Our very own, Myra from HerbanLuxe, was granted a front-stage invitation to visit the one and only! On January 1, 2006 an episode entitled Invention Convention aired on The Oprah Show. Myra chatted with Oprah about The Next Big IdeaHerbanLuxe. Her natural beauty cosmetic company came into being via her Grandmother’s wisdom. Her understanding of herbal remedies and spirituality was the prime foundation from which to grow HerbanLuxe.

It’s quite exciting and inspiring to hear a fellow Eco Etsians success story! It’s also easy to forget that behind every success story is a whole lot of time, energy, resources and heart (which I’m sure Myra is all too familiar).  “Oprah was very warm and genuine,” Myra says. “I remember being on stage with her and during a commercial she grabbed my hand, put her arm around me and said ‘I
guess you’ll just have to stand up here with me and they’ll tell us what to do – my feet are killing me in these shoes.’ I’ll never forget that.”
Myra goes on to explain, “I learned one really big lesson from appearing on Oprah.  You have to be ready; your structure has to be in place before making a big move {like appearing on Oprah}.  I didn’t have my business built in a way that would allow me to fulfill the typhoon of calls, emails and requests. So I did what instinct told me to do. I clammed up and sold – that was my biggest opportunity and my biggest failure. Not being prepared.” That being said, I’m not sure anyone can prepare for the level of exposure that being on the Oprah show is capable of creating?! A huge thanks to Myra for sharing her authentic experiences and rich lessons with us.
This brings me to the enlightening experience I had when watching that very last episode.

Follow Your Calling

Change the world wherever you are.

North Star from PeacesofIndigo

Oprah reminds us so eloquently that “It’s more than just job satisfaction, it’s about having the power to change people’s lives.” Think about the number of people you come into contact with in a day; through etsy, your blog, your facebook account, twitter. That’s a lot of people! But are you sending out a message that you are proud of? Is your company or business an extension of the ethics and morals that you yourself stand for? If not, then maybe it’s time to reevaluate. Take a step back and determine what exactly your calling looks like. Are you following the path that will take you where you need to be, in order to get you where you want to go? You are capable of “changing the world wherever you are”~(PeacesofIndigo)!

Be Yourself & Find Your Audience

Don't be a lone bird

A Lone Bird and His Trees by Shandke

In order to be yourself, you have to first know yourself. Begin by identifying some of the goals you have for your business. Don’t forget that for every long-term goal you should have short term goals to keep you motivated. It’s those short-term accomplishments; applying for a juried fair or hitting your 100th sale that will keep you going during the slow seasons. . . or when you seem to be too busy to even list new items. Shawna L Handke has definitely managed to find her audience, as well as, her calling! Make sure to check out her shop banner to learn more.

Make/Create Good Energy

“You are responsible for the energy you put out into the world.”~Oprah.

Use Your Platform

“It’s about making connections. Learn and teach from and to others. Reach out but be respectful”.

Be Grateful

Always be Gracious

Get ready to Get Tired

Success does not come easy. It comes with lots of hard work and elbow grease. Oprah did not become famous overnight (if you remember she began her career with sensationalized stories of social issues). It was through diligent hard work, using resources and connections wisely that she grew into the huge entity that she is now. Visit Oprah.com to create your own Dream Board and get a head start on organizing your ideas.

Fame vs. Service – Don’t Get it Confused

“The Oprah Winfrey Show gained credibility by not trying to profit off the products it endorsed; it had no licensing agreement with retailers when products were promoted, nor did the show make any money from endorsing books for its book club.” (Yes this tidbit came from Wikipedia, but I thought it helped to elaborate this subject perfectly).

Let Your Life Speak for You

“It lights you up and let’s you know, you’re where you’re supposed to be, doing what you’re supposed to be doing. Live from your heart,” Oprah.

Follow Newton’s Law

“For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” If you validate others, you will learn the art of “give to get”. Some of us may refer to this as Karma!

You ARE Worthy

“Your real job in life is to find your calling. . . now get about your business doing it,” Oprah Winfrey.

  1. Nichole,

I thoroughly enjoyed your inspiring article. It’s just what I needed! Thank you :)

  2. First of all, way to go Myra! What an exciting thing that you had an opportunity to share in that moment with such a strong woman! Hats off to you girl!

Second, I wish I had time right now to think about my business and how I’ll be attacking it. One day at a time once I get moved (in 15 days yikes!) but I’m saving the email with this blog because it was so inspirational that I know it will be very helpful on the other side :-) Being yourself is definitely key though, no matter what you do.

    Terrific piece Nikki!

    • Thank you so much for the kind words Jenn! Can’t wait to see the inspiring ideas soon to take place in your shop once you’re settled!! Make sure you keep us posted:)

  3. My vision is to expand my product offerings, sell at craft shows and sell more online. I’ll see where it goes after that :) Thanks for the inspiring article!

  4. Nikki; Thank you so much for including my story in your post. I believe that Oprah has had a bigger impact in the lives of so many than you realizes. I saw her “Master Class” series where she shared her story in two parts – it was riveting. She is definitely the type of person I try to model myself after.

    Thanks for writing this.

    • Myra,
Thank you for allowing me to include your story! Your experience was awesome and your inclusion of ‘lessons learned’, although somewhat bittersweet, really put things in perspective. As sellers, we all want to be HUGE. . . but we forget sometimes it takes a lot of planning to be HUGE. You do a wonderful job of modeling her authenticity and honesty. I truly respect that, as a woman and as a business owner!
      Thank you

  5. Thank you for a beautiful & inspiring article! I loved the quotes!!!

    • The Quotes were my favorite part! Oprah is such an inspiring and yet down-to-earth woman. I believe her magic comes from her true desire to make a difference and improve the lives of others. Glad you enjoyed the article and thanks for the comment <3 Nikki
