Lynn Minney of Lynn Minney Designs resides in Central New York with her husband of 9 years, Les, and their daughter, Claire.
After a long hiatus from machine sewing, two years ago I found a magazine article about making bags out of felted sweaters. I made one for my sis and I was hooked. Fast forward two years and now I am running my own business. I love it and I’m totally hooked. I wish I had more time to sew and go thrifting, but I have to do the 9-5 thing. I enjoy the freedom. I am so fortunate because my business blends three things I love: creating, recycling and independence
* What inspires you?
I get inspiration from bags that I see in a stores and create a unique item with a history, more color & texture. I also carry a small sketchbook with me in my bag because ideas sometimes flood me & I can’t remember all of them Furthermore, I’m inspired by the clothing, fabrics & buttons that I’ve collected.
I create accessories from wool sweaters, jeans and neckties. I am constantly on the lookout for articles of clothing that would make a special purse, brooch, etc. I am really excited about my recent purchase of compostable mailers (how geeky am I)?!
* In one word, describe your creative process.
*What do you listen to while you’re working?
When I’m sewing I listen to a mixed bag of music (or sometimes Disney movies) from classic rock and country to contemporary christian. You should see my itunes library!
Crafting is in my blood. My family is full of women who sew. My Grandma Jennie taught me to use a sewing machine at a young age & I also learned how to sew by hand in 4-H. I studied design in college, so I’ve never stopped creating things. I’ve always loved to sew by hand and have made everyone in my family a Christmas stocking.
* Where does the magic happen?
The “magic” happens in my office/sewing/playroom which happens to be a bit of a hot mess. It’s not pretty, but it will be someday! Unfortunately I have to do all of my cutting & ironing in my dining room, so I have to do a lot of running around.
* What are you currently working on?
I am working on a couple of new products for my shop… aprons, coasters and potholders. I’m trying to build up my stock in anticipation of my first craft show. Yay!!!
* What is the most eco-friendly purchase you have made?
I buy eco-friendly items all of the time, so it’s hard to single out one. If I had to choose one it would be this Rosemary Shampoo Bar from Sheri’s Soap Opera.
Every time I head out to do my weekly shopping I am looking for a better eco-friendly product. If money were no object I would purchase an electric car or solar panels for my home.
