{News and Views} What’s Eco-Happening in June

June is a month of global environmental awareness, from the World Day to Combat Desertification to Clean Energy Awareness and even Global Wind Day!

1. World Day to Combat Desertification

Desertification is the process by which fertile land becomes desert, typically as a result of drought, deforestation, and inappropriate agriculture.

The forests and trees anchor ecosystems, and with real threats of land desertification and climate change, millions of people right now are facing food and water scarcity and extreme poverty, to pinpoint just a couple issues that face us globally. There are 2 billion people who live in the dry lands of the world, and the World Day to Combat Desertification brings global awareness to such a crucial matter.

2. Global Wind Day – June 15, 2011

Wind is an excellent renewable energy source, with wind energy being generated in over 75 countries!

Global Wind Day is a day for awareness and for becoming involved—you  can visit wind farms, meet experts, attend events and find out everything you want to know about wind energy.

Thousands of public events are organized all over the world, and I’m sure there is one near you. It’s easy to get involved and find out more!

3. Clean Technology Conference & Expo 2011 – June 13-16, 2011

Starting today, June 13th—16th, is the Clean Technology Conference & Expo 2011

in Boston, Massachusetts.

The goal of the Clean Technology Conference & Expo is to present solutions and strategies for clean innovative technology for investors, government, and business leaders. I know there are plenty of us eco-conscious lovelies in that area, so if this is something you’re interested in, I highly suggest you attend and learn a little more about what businesses are doing to make our world a better and more efficient place!

4. International Year of Forests

The International Year of Forests, 2011 is a global platform to celebrate people’s action to sustainably manage the world’s forests. The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests.

I hope all of these fantastic conscious events inspire you to get involved—locally or globally!

So tell us, what are you going to do in the month of June?

  1. Thank you so much! There was so much more going on, but I wanted to touch on the biggest world wide events this month! Australia also has a bike to work day, including a petition to allow scooters to use empty lanes. And as far as Wind Day, I know here in Boulder County, Colorado, there are wind turbines that you’re allowed to go tour around for free with an expert!

  2. Excellent! Thank you for the info.

  3. Thanks for all this wonderful info for what’s happening in June. It is a great idea for a monthly post!
