If your dogs are anything like mine they love rolling and romping through the summer heat. And while we already know how important it is to keep our furry friends hydrated on warm sticky days – what’s some summer sun without tasty frozen treats?!
To give your canine a yummy snack that will cool them off without compromising their health, try your hand at these homemade pooch popsicle recipes:
1 ripe organic banana / A half cup of plain organic yogurt / 1 tsp raw honey / 1 tsp ground flax seed
Using a food processor, or large mortar, blend together the banana and yogurt. Once combined add the raw honey and ground flax and mix thoroughly. Pour the combination into a chilled ice cube tray and pop in the freezer until solid.
Frozen Peanut Butter Cups
Half cup of unsweetened almond milk / 1 tbsp carob powder / 2 tbsp organic peanut butter
Blend together the almond milk and carob powder until well mixed. Pour the ‘chocolate’ milk into a blender, add peanut butter, and process until smooth. Transfer thick mix to an ice cube tray and freeze until solid.
Apple Cinnamon Crumble Pops
Half cup of unsweetened almond milk / 2 tbsp rolled oats / dash of cinnamon / 1 organic apple peeled and cubed
Stir together the almond milk, rolled oats, and cinnamon and pour into an ice cube tray so each section is only half full. Then. drop apple cubes into each mold one by one until they are filled to the top. Pop the tray into the freezer for a few hours and serve to your dogs for a refreshing treat.
Don’t stop at these simple recipes – try to make your own using other ingredients like carrots or cooked sweet potatoes. Be sure that your ingredients are organic and natural so as not to expose your pets to potential toxins or pesticides. One other word of warning: be careful to avoid grapes, raisins, avocado, chocolate and other common foods that can be dangerous to pets by referring to the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center.
If you have a feline who you’re looking to spoil plop ice cubes into their water bowls to give them some extra stimulation and encourage hydration! You’ll love watching your kitty bob for ice cubes (I know we do!).
