This recipe is the best one I have found for a yummy snack while being gluten free. It is also the easiest one I have; it only has 3 ingredients!
Ingredients & other materials you will need:
- 1 package of Food for Life Rice Tortillas
- high heat sunflower oil
- sea salt
- paper bag or other item to soak up oil
- metal tongs
Preparation:
Take the tortillas out of the freezer about 10 minutes prior to when you want to start, or put them in the fridge the day before you make chips. Put about 1 cup of oil in a wok like pan or deep frying pan on medium to high heat. Cut up all tortillas into 1″ slices while the oil is heating. To check if oil is ready, run your hands under water and shake off excess, but flick a small amount of water into the oil. Make sure when you do this to have a cover to protect you from the hot oil that will spit back after mixing with the water. If it spits it’s ready, and if not it needs more time. When the oil is ready put about 7 of the tortilla strips in. The oil will bubble around them and when the edges turn brown, flip them over using metal tongs so the other side can brown up. When you think they’re ready, you can take them out and put them on the paper bag to cool and let excess oil drip off. Then sprinkle with salt, or have them plain.
Notes:
You should get 50 or more chips out of one package of tortillas. If you need more chips or you like to make them on a whim like me, you can keep the tortillas in the freezer all cut up or in the package and defrost before frying. It’s great to keep extras in the freezer in case you have company coming over or if your family eats them all up!
WARNING: if your oil gets low and you need to add some to the pan, TURN OFF YOUR HEAT FIRST and wait for the oil to cool off! If you add the cool oil to the hot oil, it won’t be pretty and you can be seriously injured.Â
I know some of you in the mid-west are dying of heat and may not want to make these since it can heat up the house, but they are so worth it! I usually eat at least 20 while I’m cooking them! I apologize for the lack of photos, but my mom stole my camera for her vacation to Bermuda this week. Do you have any excursions planned for the end of the summer?

hehe, that’s okay, you are never too old to learn how to cook! I was forced due to a gluten allergy, among other things.
Thank you so much for the recipe! I’m now 41 years old and just getting into cooking. Ha!
