2011: Eco-Friendly Year in Review for Team Eco Etsy

I thought 2010 was spectacular for Eco Etsy but let me tell you….2011 was even better…!!

When we weren’t busy recycling and upcyling in 2011, we were making our eco-friendly shops more successful than ever.

We were being featured in magazines, Etsy newsletters, newspapers, and being voted to be top featured sellers and bloggers. We trotted across the globe and back with recognition for being environmentally sensitive Etsy sellers.

Furthermore, as a team, we’ve attracted record number of dedicated, environmentally conscientious members, Etsy sellers, fans, and followers across the board.

As of this writing we have…

  • 408 members with more on the waiting list
  • Facebook: 2164 fans
  • Twitter: 5864 followers
  • NEW this year —> Pinterest: 501 followers

We switched to Google Group as a result of increasing size in membership and the need for a better communication platform this year.

NOTE: if you are a member of Eco Etsy team but haven’t joined Google yet, you MUST join Google Group in order to stay as a member. Please contact me if you have any questions. If you are NOT a member but would love to join Eco Etsy Team, we will be accepting new members in the Spring so be on the lookout for the announcement here or on our facebook page.

2011 In Review…

Gift Swap – We had a fun start in 2011 by swapping gifts in January. We had an opportunity to see how talented our teammates are by exchanging gifts with each other.

Earth Day Auction – Donated $818 to Habitat for Humanity Japan after the horrific earthquake and Tsunami  that rocked the small nation, from our annual Earth Day Auction in May. The lucky winners donated to the worthy cause while winning some awesome items from the auction. Susan, one of the lucky winners said,

…the earth-day auction(s) … was so fun trying to win, and then waiting all year until Christmas to give all the items I won as gifts. Everyone loved each and every item.               ~SMB Design~

Sprint Partnership – We were so stoked to be chosen by Sprint as one of a few green sellers to be on their premiere app called “Green ID Pack” on selected Android phones. “Green ID Pack”  is one of the most popular and most downloaded apps on Sprint to date and we will continue to be featured in 2012.

First Meet Up – team’s first meet up – a first team meet up ever to be held at the Etsy headquarter – was held in Brooklyn, NY on June 24 with attendance of Eco Etsy Team members from MI, DC, NJ, CT, and from throughout the NY area. With the team grant from Etsy, we were able to get together, mingle, learn how to make handmade journals that Etsy filmed for LIVEStream.   And, as our team’s motto to help the planet (and people), we donated the journals we made to enchantedmakeovers.org (See our team picture in the middle of its home page)

Green Holiday Guide –  this awesome resourceful guide was a collaborative effort of the team and the wonderfully creative graphic artist Minna of Karuski brought it all together. It featured countless ways you can green hour holiday and it even featured our shops as part of a green gift shopping guide in the back. Etsy gave it a big shout out to its e-mail subscribers by including the link to the guide in one of its newsletters. Yay! This guide was another example of the team’s awesome collective effort and we can’t be more proud of ‘us’!

Blog – our main platform for spreading green messages and sharing our passion continues to grow. We added News and Views, Tuesday Treasuries, Thoughts on Shops, and Business Tips this year and they have been wildly popular and successful. We have more than 11 writers and guest contributors who write provocative posts regularly and faithfully. We are so lucky to have them contribute and they add so much to the success of our site. Readers clicked on the shop category links to check out our shops every day and read the informative posts and shared them across the web constantly.

Ricebowls – this was an impromptu project that one of our members, Cat of Uncorked suggested, to collect change and donate to an organization that helps orphanages around the world. She sent one of her signature cork necklaces to those who wanted the rice bowls to collect change. Once again, this type of spontaneous suggestions and willingness of the members to participate, demonstrates how our members are full of creative ways to improve lives of others!

Last but not the least, I am so happy to finally have found a partner, a co-captain, Lori of One Shade Greener, to share ideas and to lead this great team with. In the short few months we’ve been working together, we’ve had nothing but fun and inspiring brainstorming sessions.

I can’t wait to implement some of the plans we’ve discussed and share them with the team!

Looking Ahead in 2012…

We certainly had a busy year in 2011 but wait until you see what’s NEW for 2012!

  • Meet Up – we will be planning on our annual Meet Up in a different city, maybe in the West Coast…
  • Member-to-Member Mentor Program – while I thought about starting this program this year, our blog’s “Thoughts on Shop” was so successful that we didn’t implement a “person-to-person” mentoring program. I think it’s a great program for the new and established sellers to learn and teach each other and I would love some input from you in regarding starting this project.
  • Blog – we will be adding the following new sections: Eco-Inspirations, Green Living, Food and Gardening, Guest Posts, and Member Spotlights

There is one more project that is in the works but I can’t reveal the details…..yet. I can’t even spell the first letter…ok, the first letter is ‘P’…..but you will be the first second to know when it’s finalized. And when it is revealed for y’all to participate, I expect 100% participation!!

On that note, I want to THANK YOU for a fantastic year! I am truly lucky to have you as my team mates, my cheer leaders and the greatest supporters in all that we do as a team.

I can’t say any better than what I said last year.

You are truly the envy of all Etsy teams, are model environmentalists and the most talented handmade artists. And most of all, …. true team players. Without your love and support, this team would not have been as much fun to lead. “

I hope 2012 will be better than ever and it will bring you much happiness!!

Health, Love and Success to you all!

Your Co-Captain
