Priorities and Profits

I know this is supposed to be a post about Eco-Inspirations, but I’ve been feeling that it’s important to share a bit of wisdom that’s been passed on to me. Hopefully, it will be inspirational, and only lacking in the “eco” part. ;)

This is the busiest time of year for many of us – even if we weren’t shop owners. There are social obligations, seasonal chores, family traditions to uphold, errands to run…and the list goes on. And for small business owners, we spend a whole lot of time (if we’re lucky) processing orders, standing in line at the post office and checking our email.

What if I said STOP? Just for one day this month, STOP all the business, STOP all the emails, STOP the blogging, STOP the errands. Don’t turn on the computer at all. Don’t get in your car, write lists, vacuum or cook. Just stop. Would it make you uncomfortable? Think you might lose sales, customers, momentum, profits?

What about your mental and emotional health? Your physical needs? Your family’s needs? This is a very stressful time of year and the best gift you can give yourself is the gift of time. Of REST.

Join me in taking one Sunday off before Christmas Eve. Make the day all your own, for you and your family. No phones. No computers. No orders. No business. And when you come back the next Monday, imagine the energy you will have! Think of this as an investment in your business. We all need time to recharge and it’s far too easy to put that on the back burner during the holiday season.

Are you with me?

  1. I love this post Yancy. I will definitely take your advice and give myself a day of fully deserved, energizing rest! I think I’ll go for the Sunday after next. I’m pretty next Sunday is the day I’ll be auditioning to sing in a local show here in Branson.

  2. Shipping from home is much easier than going to the post office.

    • @Aquarian Bath: Most of my items ship via First Class Mail, and in my area, the mailman will only pick up Priority Mail or Express. So I have to print my labels at home and then drop them off at the PO.

  3. Done and done! I will be doing just that for a couple of weeks in late december and am so excited for the rest!

  4. Go, Lori! Wahoo! I think that’ll be mine, too. Either that or the previous Sunday. Maybe I’ll get crazy and do BOTH! :)

  5. What a wonderful post! I’m in for the challenge…now I just need to pick which Sunday. I’m thinking the 16th. Hopefully, others will join in the challenge and give themselves the gift of a “day off” this holiday season.
