I had the pleasure of reading the popular Handmade to Sell written by Kelly Rand, former editor of Crafting a Green World, a co-founder and executive director of Hello Craft, a director of the Summit of Awesome, and a Crafty Bastard organizer.
This easy to read but chock full of insightful facts and tips “bible” for handmade seller was an eye opener, especially someone like me who have been selling handmade goodies part-time for close to 5 years.
The “reality” of what (handmade) business should be like landed on my eyes as early as Chapter Two.
Do you want a hobby or a business? …If you want a successful business but can only dedicate the amount of time and attention you would to a hobby, your business will be less than successful and your self-esteem will tank.
Boy, if that wasn’t Ms. Reality slapping me in the face, I don’t know what is. Then she goes on to say, “That doesn’t mean you should stop yourself form starting simply because yo don’t have it all figured out at the moment. More than one successful crafter out there has at one time or another admitted, “I don’t know what I’m doing!”” Oh, thank goodness. Maybe she’ll tell us ‘how’ to figure things out in the book.
And she did.
The book covers everything from:
- What types of business you should set up
- How to price your work
- How to keep records and accounting
- How much inventory to keep in stock
- Copyrights and Trademark – what’s the difference and why are they important
- Is market research important and how to conduct it
- How to develop a product line
- What exactly is branding and how to create it
- Should you wholesale?
- The craft show Do’s and Don’ts
The book has a Resources section with listings of successful sellers, online marketplaces, craft fairs, brick-and-mortar shops, trade shows, and craft schools.
Here is a chat I had with Kelly on Google Hangout.
And she was gracious enough to offer a copy for a giveaway so you can read it for yourself. Please read the Terms and Conditions at the end.
P.S. If you can’t wait to find out if you won the giveaway and wants to buy the book, you can purchase Handmade to Sell from Amazon.
